LJ TRENDWATCH

Introducing LJ Trendwatch. A monthly look at what’s hot and what’s not!

LJ Trendwatch will consist of fun, bite-sized articles that delve into interesting interior design topics, trend forecasts and Home Staging news. Basically, the perfect read for when you’re dashing out the door with a croissant in your mouth.

To kick things off, let’s talk Wicker. A trend that came flying back again in recent years, proving it refuses to be pigeon-holed in any decade.

Fashion’s a funny thing. One minute you’re strolling confidently down the high street, clip-clopping in your platform shoes, bell-bottoms swinging around your ankles while your shirt collars threaten to decapitate all who pass you. And then suddenly it’s the 80s, with spray-on jeans, hulking shoulder pads and a perm large enough for nesting kestrels.

We may look at old photos and laugh sometimes, but how many trends from decades past have we seen come back in recent years?

You might have thought that wicker had been consigned to history, but the once ubiquitous woven furniture, which first emerged with the Egyptians 5000 years ago, is coming back in a big way. And the big names in interiors all agree, it deserves to.

Forget about that moulding old chair in your gran’s conservatory, the one with no cushion and a piece of alert reed threatening to poke you somewhere unfortunate. In the right hands, wicker is an art form and a durable, lightweight alternative to much of today’s soulless, factory-standard furniture.

But don’t take our word for it – check out our Blakeney Collection for yourself.
